It is readily formed and machined, although its relative toughness means that better machining is generally achieved at lower speeds with heavier feeds. Minimum mechanical properties for annealed Types 316, 316L, 317 and 317L austenitic stainless steel plate, sheet and strip as required by ASTM specifications A240 and ASME specification SA-240, are shown below. This low carbon version of Alloy 316 is immune from the sensitisation caused by the precipitation of carbides at grain boundaries when heated, resulting in its widespread use in larger section welded components. As a fully austenitic grade it possesses excellent toughness, even down to cryogenic temperatures. It also provides higher creep, stress-to-rupture and tensile strength at elevated temperatures than a basic Alloy 304. As mentioned, it is fundamental that metal implants are not susceptible to corrosion. 316 steel has 0-0.08 percent while 316L has 0.03 maximum. This composition is made up of specifically chosen alloying elements with the goal of enhancing the metal’s mechanical properties while allowing it to work in many industrial applications. 316 steel has 14-15 percent, and 316L has 16-18 percent. AISI 316L stainless steel is known for its superior strength and corrosion resistance. The alloy has excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion in the as-welded condition. Type 316L stainless steel selected for the purpose of surgical implants contains approximately 17 to 19 of chromium and 14 nickel. EOS StainlessSteel 316L is a high performance marine-grade austen- itic stainless steel that is molybdenum alloyed for enhanced corrosion resistance in chloride environments. Chemical Composition: Both types contain iron, chromium, and nickel. 316L stainless steel is often used in applications where low carbon content is important, such as the oil & gas sector, piping, food & beverage equipment, and pharmaceuticals. Grade 316H refers S31609, carbon content 0.04 to 0.10, it provides higher temperature resistance than 316L. This makes it less susceptible to corrosion and staining. It also resists corrosion in polluted marine atmospheres. It has the same chemical composition as 316 stainless steel, but a lower carbon content. Alloy 316L resists atmospheric corrosion, as well as, moderately oxidising and reducing environments. The addition of Mo provides the product with much improved corrosion resistance compared with Alloy 304, particularly with respect to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments. There is a 316LM alloy, a 2.5 minimum Mo version of Type 316L stainless steel, available only by special order.
